Alarm Monitoring & How It Works

How do the monitoring stations respond to my emergencies?

Feeling a little confused on the different types of monitoring offered for home security systems? Let’s break it down so you can make an educated decision when choosing the type of protection best suited for your home.

The first and most traditional type of monitoring is a landline telephone. Many security companies prefer it as the first form of communication because it is the most reliable. Think about the last time you had a power outage and a landline phone… the phone still works even when the power is out!

But here’s where it gets a little tricky, Comcast was the giant that brought VOIP to the mainstream as a “landline” service. VOIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is not a traditional landline. It uses the internet to communicate, therefore if the power goes down, so does the phone!

This is why having cellular backup is nearly always recommended. First of all, this can be used as the one and only form of communication if your family has chosen to get rid of landlines completely. It’s also the most effective back up to a landline. If an experienced thief wants to get into your home, they can easily cut the exterior communication line and disable your system completely. Having cellular backup keeps the security system in communication with the monitoring station no matter what.

Finally, monitoring through the internet is growing in popularity because of the features that come with it. Home surveillance, thermostat control, lighting control, automatic door locks, arming and disarming from remote locations… all of these features are available with a system that utilizes the internet.

The best news of all, you can have all three! Your system can be connected to the monitoring station with a landline, that landline can be protected with cellular backup and you can utilize all of those awesome features with an internet connection!

Welcome to the new world of home security!
