DIY or Professional Install?

DIY vs. Professional Installs

So many security companies are now offering Do It Yourself (DIY) options on both security systems and security cameras. Many people are choosing DIY options with home projects that they never would have considered before (like plumbing, electrical work, etc) because they are looking at it as a way to cut costs and save money. You know you need security, now let’s discuss the pros and cons of DIY and Professionally Installed systems.

There are many things to consider when thinking of a DIY security system, especially if this will be your first system. First of all, if you’re looking at a hardwired system, ALWAYS choose a professional installation. If you are not an experienced electrician you can very easily make mistakes that could not only lead to your security equipment not working but could also interfere with hardwired items already in your home. A big up side to this is hardwired systems will cost considerably less than wireless systems. This could end up being a savings for you even after you pay the labor to have it installed.

If you are looking at a wireless system, do the research on the equipment you’re getting. You can always find unbiased reviews about different companies by taking advantage of consumer ratings on sites like Google, Angie’s List, Yelp, etc. Always remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. If you find a security system with ultra low or no monthly fees and you can install it yourself in under 30 minutes with little to no up front costs, STAY AWAY! If it takes you less than 30 minutes to give your home the protection it really needs, how long do you think it will take a burglar to figure out a way around it?

There’s another huge benefit with professional installations. Any quality security company will stand behind the work of their technicians 100%. This means if something goes wrong, they’ll come back out and fix it! You can also get lifetime warranties on parts and labor from many companies that will cover every piece of equipment for as long as you have the system.

Let’s also take resale value into consideration. Security system popularity has been on a steady rise for many years. We no longer live in the world where we can sleep soundly knowing a door was left unlocked. Potential homebuyers see a huge benefit in a home that already has a security system. Now, we’re not talking about having wireless sensors on all of your doors and windows from a DIY project. We’re talking about opening the front door, hearing the system say “Front Door Open” and all the while you had no idea the home had a security system because you can’t see the equipment in a hardwired system.

Another fact to consider, many people who have had a security system for more than 10 years have been through the experience of switching monitoring companies. This is another huge value when it comes to professionally installed systems. Hardwired equipment has been around for years and when you switch from one company to another, the worst thing to hear is “We’re going to have to replace all of your equipment because we can’t use it.” You will likely deal with that problem far less with a hardwired system than you would with a completely wireless system. Many of the DIY systems are proprietary. This means that only the company you purchased the system from can provide the monitoring. That’s not a problem you want to have if you ever decide you want to try to get a better rate with another company.

All in all, the choice is yours on DIY or Pro Installs. It all comes down to what kind of system you want, what you want it to do and how long you plan on having it. If you’re looking for something to protect a vacant home that you’re renovating, DIY would be the best way to go. If you’re looking to provide your family and home with security and life safety features for the long haul, go for a professional install.
